“The global health emergency has made the plight of refugees even more dramatic (at the end of 2019 there were about 80 million people forced to leave their homes because of persecution, violence, poverty) and therefore the situation that has arisen requires even more energetic action by the international community, and as far as possible by our country, so that assistance and reception for refugees, displaced persons and stateless people can be guaranteed”. Writen by Paolo Giordani, President of the International Diplomatic Institute, on the occasion of the World Refugee Day celebrated today. June 20 of each year is the date chosen for this observance by the General Assembly of the UN with resolution 55/76 of 2000.
“The dreams and hopes of refugees – underlines Giordani – must not remain so: they belong to all of us as human beings and we must all feel committed to making them come true. Also for this reason the IDI formally adheres to the #WithRefugees campaign that the UNHCR will continue until September 19, when the homonymous petition, with precise requests to governments, will be presented at the Glass Palace”.
